Speech by Peter Russo MP, Member for Toohey
Member for Toohey, Peter Russo MP, represented the Minister for Education, Honourable Grace Grace MP, at the official opening of the Senior Secondary Precinct at Brisbane Christian College. Here is his speech:
Good afternoon. Thank you for welcoming me to your College.
I am delighted to be here today to help you celebrate the official opening of your new facilities. The Minister for Education Grace Grace sends her apologies for not being able to attend today’s ceremony.
Before I speak specifically about today’s opening, I wanted to reflect on the values that I have observed in your College and the wider College community. Your College sets a very high standard through its wonderful reputation for inclusivity. You go out of your way to make sure that children and students who have special needs as well as those from all cultural backgrounds are welcomed and supported here. You also enjoy the support of an energetic and caring College community. Parents here are welcomed and encouraged to be involved in the life of the College. I applaud your College for this inclusive and family-centred approach.
Families are also drawn here because of your strong Christian values, the dedicated team who work here and your strong focus on the individual in every child. You appreciate that all students have unique learning styles and you provide the education and nurturing environment to help them flourish and succeed.
When I entered parliament in 2015, one of the main drivers for me was my commitment to improved education. I cannot think of a better way to demonstrate this government’s commitment to improving education than via a grant to help colleges like yours to build the facilities they need. I am so proud the State Government was able to contribute $700,000 to help you build this magnificent building.
It’s so exciting to see the completion of your College’s Senior Secondary Precinct here on the site of the former Nyanda State High School, which closed in 2013. It includes eight classrooms with touch screens and projectors, a lecture theatre with a stage area, sound and lighting, an administration and reception area plus offices. It also includes staff areas, a student kitchen, an outdoor kitchenette for events, covered verandas and walkways, a covered outdoor breakout area with plenty of seating for students, two bathrooms, a lift and a Uniform Shop. The finished project is a delight to see and I’m sure it’s already providing wonderful benefits for your College.
It’s also hard to believe what has been achieved in the thirty-three years since you opened in 1985. You started as a college with sixteen students and today you support a population of 951 students. That’s amazing growth indeed — and reflects the strong demand for places here. That in itself tells a story about the high quality of education on offer here.
In a nutshell, these new facilities which have been in use since the beginning of Term 4 are helping students here to excel. It’s great to see your College developing in such a practical, stylish and tasteful way. I also commend your College and the Federal Government for their generous contributions to this project. Together we are investing in the future of our schools and delivering the facilities our students need to make the most of their education.
Thanks to Principal Sean Morrison, the College Board, the College Management Team, College staff, Pastor Sacha Williams, Life Church, and everyone involved in this important project.
